5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW WHEN USING SUNSCREEN

The warm weather and balmy sunshine can certainly be enticing during this time of year. Here are five specific ways to help you select the right type of sunscreen to guard your skin from sun damage.

  1. Read the sunscreen label thoroughly: There are varying qualities of sunscreen that can help or hinder your effort to shield your skin during the summer months. Always go with 30 SPF or higher. In selecting a sunscreen, choose a brand that is broad spectrum and protects your skin from both UVB and UVA radiation. These labels are usually listed so you can see them easily. UVA radiation will reach the thickest layer of skin called the dermis. Damage to this layer is what will cause early wrinkling and signs of aging on the skin. UVB radiation will typically burn through the top layer of skin, or the skin surface and is often responsible for advancing skin cancer.

  2. Limit sun exposure: The sun is at its most intense between 10 AM and 4 PM. You don’t need to hide away indoors, but be mindful of how much time you spend outdoors during these peak hours when the sun can burn your skin more easily. Sunscreen can act as a valuable protectant, but if you remain outside for extended periods during these peak hours, be sure to reapply sunscreen often.

  3. Reapply sunscreen throughout the day: Twenty minutes before you go outside, apply at least one ounce of sunscreen. As the day progresses, reapply sunscreen over your whole body every two hours. If you are doing a high-intensity activity, swimming, or sweating a lot, reapply every hour.

  4. Wear sunscreen all year: Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach. Snow skiing or a winter walk can still expose you to UV rays, although the temperature isn’t as warm.

  5. Get the right sunscreen for your skin type: If you have dry skin, invest in a cream based sunscreen that you really like. Gels are ideal for hairy areas like the scalp. If you like the brand and feel of the sunscreen you purchase, you are more likely to use it daily.
